Drop.io Private Exchange – Free Interactive Files Sharing Storage Service with Comment Support

Drop.io is not an ordinary file hosting service provider like ADrive, MyBloop, or MediaFire. Drop.io allows users who want to share files with other people to upload the files to Drop.io, and store or host the files on Drop.io for easy downloading. Instead, Drop.io, which called itself private exchange, allows user to create simple private exchange points called “drops.” Users on Drop.io manage the “drops”, which is another kind of account based on files uploaded. There is no official user registration or email sign up required.

If you still don’t understand what a “drop” is, try to imagine it as a chunk of space used to store and share anything privately (pictures, videos, audio, documents, etc.), without accounts, registration, or an email address. Instead of per user, drop is of per file or files basis. Or rather view it as a web storage drive not tied to a single user.

User creates a drop when he or she uploads files to Drop.io. Each drop has customized parameters such as name of the drop, password for protection, whether others can add files to the drop, and how long the drop should exists. Uploading can be done online at Drop.io web site, or by emailing files or MMS from phone as attachment to new@drop.io with drop name as subject title. After drop is created, user can even call to add their talking to the drop as MP3, or fax a document to the drop as PDF.

Other special unique features to Drop.ie file hosting is that users, including viewers, can still add more stuff to the drop, with email and RSS feed notifications. Links, notes and comments by viewers can also be added. The best thing is when downloading from the drop. Other than usual web download, uses can also fax out .doc, .pdf, .xls files to a fax machine, email any file under 10 MB to recipients, or MMS the file to mobile phone. Embed code to place on website or blog is supported too.

Drop.io does not publish drops that been created publicly in any directory. Which mean drops are not “searchable” and not “networked”, and always remain private as points for exchange between individuals or groups, unless users publish it publicly on blogs, forums and websites. Unlike MediaFire and MyBloop, Drop.io limit the storage size of each drop to 100MB, so that’s mean the uploaded file size also cannot exceed 100 MB in size.

By default, the drops created are considered expired and will be deleted and removed after 1 year inactivity since last view. Or creator or admin can set a fixed date for expiration to delete the drop automatically, or destroy it immediately. So don’t use Drop.io as a backup storage drive for your important files.
