Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista SP1 Release to Web (RTW) Delay

Microsoft is not going to going to release Windows XP SP3 to the Windows Update, and probably Microsoft Download Center on schedule, which set to be today (April 29) after all. Worse still, Windows Vista SP1 release-to-web (RTW) which has been rolled out in phase through Windows Update has been tentatively halted. Both service packs are reported to have a new compatibility issue with Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS)

Chris Keroack, Release Manager for Windows XP Service Pack 3 from Windows Serviceability says the following on TechNet forum:

In the last few days, we have uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to the web.

To help protect customers, we plan to put filtering in place shortly to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Once filtering is in place, we expect to release Windows XP SP3 to the web.

We are also testing a fix, and will make it available once that process is complete. Once they have installed the fix, Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers should be able to run both service packs.

Until then, we advise Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers to not install either service pack. Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers running Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 should contact Microsoft Customer Support Services for additional information.

It’s unclear how long is the delay, whether it’s few hours, few days or few weeks. But from the past records of the speed Microsoft fixing problems and came out with patches, it may take days. For those who can’t wait, and want only the official version, the direct download links for Windows XP SP3 setup installer package is available from Windows Update server. It probably won’t be affected by the filter to stop the offering the service pack, and no detection or offering is needed for direct downloading.
