Hi – Sorry for ‘noobie Q’s’. especially if they’ve been asked many times before – (I tried to find this info… and have failed) –

1) Can I install this over the top of my XP Home + SP2 – and keep my softwares already installed?? (I cannot face reinstalling all those proggies… / cannot face a ‘fresh installation with wiping’…)

2) Is there a recommended ’safety’ way to enable ‘over the top’ installing without losing current installs, if direct installing the O/S risks breaking links of installed software etc? (again, not involving reinstalling all progs individually…)

3) Is there any way of removing unneeded XP files – if they still exist – from previous updates and install of XP? – Would this happen anyway? – or is the hard drive likely to be even more full than before?

Shambala you are an idiot. You need to follow the links on this blog to know what they are talking about. You will still need a key eventually it is just now Microsoft has made it so you can install it without a key so you can try it out for 30 days. PLEASE FOLLOW THE LINKS BEFORE YOU MAKE COMMENTS LIKE THAT.

I can’t believe all the “give me a key” & “where’s the key?” type comments!
This is VERY SIMPLE…these downloads are GENUINE LEGITIMATE Microsoft copies of the XP SP3 CDs. The Retail ISOs are identical to the CDs you buy off the shelf (but without an activation key). These are intended for people who have already purchased an earlier version i.e. if you already have XP Home, XP Home SP1 or XP Home SP2 then download the SP3 version above, burn it to CD (that’s what ISOs are generally for), install it and use your existing key to activate it. Same for XP Pro Retail or Volume License (although if you have a VL you are probably a corporation or institution). No need to worry about the CD (volume) Label as it is burnt to the CD along with everything else! If you are looking for pirated WinXP look elsewhere as these won’t help you!!

If the Retail version does not require a key — then the OS is altered (cracked) not just downloaded to the public (stolen) from Technet.

Technet retail versions still require the use of a key.

And most cracked versions of Windows also have rootkits or other malware added. Of course most modern infected OSes work just fine most the time. The providers are merely looking for <1% use of your computer for software bot network attacks against governments and corporations.
